Trail Rides

A 7.5 mile Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society Trail Ride begins at the Gettysburg Horse Park at Artillery Ridge Campground. Upon entry to the campground you will be directed to the ride staging area, where you will park your trailer and check in with our ride coordinator. You will be required to provide proof of a current negative Coggins Test before you unload your horses. (Remember: No Coggins – No Ride. This is a campground rule.) After you check in, it’s tack-up and time to ride.

POTW 11-1-09The ride is approximately 3 1/2 – 4 hours long. You will be riding over the 2nd and 3rd day’s battle. The events of those 2 days will be narrated by a licensed battlefield guide. At the half way point, of your ride, there will be a short break. You may dismount, stretch your legs, water your horse. Drinks and a snack will be provided by the club. Upon your return from your ride, a lunch will be provided.

The trails on the battlefield are stone and gravel. It is recommended that your horse have shoes or some form of temporary boots as riding on the grass is prohibited and subject to citation by the park rangers.

The Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society holds four trail rides during the year. The trail rides are a means for the club to raise funds for their various trail improvement projects. The Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society has donated a Kabota utility vehicle, used for horse trail maintenance; placed hitching rails at various points of interest on the battlefield, and purchased gravel for the horse trailer parking area at McMillan’s Woods.
